Calcification responses of subtropical corals to ocean acidification: a case study from Sesoko Island, Okinawa, Japan

چکیده

We investigated the effect of five levels pCO2-adjusted seawater (300 μatm [pre-industrial] to 1200 [near-future]) on calcification rates six coral species: Acropora nasuta, A. tenuis, Montipora digitata, Pocillopora damicornis, Porites cylindrica, and Galaxea fascicularis, which are common species in subtropical Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan. In most species, declines were pCO2-dependent as previously reported. Responses lower pH significantly differed among common-garden tanks. Corals showed both linear non-linear responses a wide range pCO2, could be attributable physiological differences inter-species. Our results consistent with previous studies suggest that corals ocean acidification can vary species.

Mediterranean corals in response to ocean acidification

16 17 In recent years, some of the ramifications of the ocean acidification problematic derived 18 from the anthropogenic rising of atmospheric CO2 have been widely studied. In 19 particular, the potential effects of a lowering pH on tropical coral reefs have received 20 special attention. However, only a few studies have focused on testing the effects of 21 ocean acidification in corals from t...

Calcification rates and the effect of ocean acidification on Mediterranean cold-water corals.

Global environmental changes, including ocean acidification, have been identified as a major threat to scleractinian corals. General predictions are that ocean acidification will be detrimental to reef growth and that 40 to more than 80 per cent of present-day reefs will decline during the next 50 years. Cold-water corals (CWCs) are thought to be strongly affected by changes in ocean acidificat...

Responses of Two Scleractinian Corals to Cobalt Pollution and Ocean Acidification

The effects of ocean acidification alone or in combination with warming on coral metabolism have been extensively investigated, whereas none of these studies consider that most coral reefs near shore are already impacted by other natural anthropogenic inputs such as metal pollution. It is likely that projected ocean acidification levels will aggravate coral reef health. We first investigated ho...
